FITTED IT YET?36your proficiency in operating the aircraft safely. The flight test for your LM wings is done using a certified large model.Step 7: Final Approval and Permit to FlyLMC%u2019s problem not yours! If everything is in order when Form C is submitted and you hold the required LM wings qualification, the controller will issue your Permit to Fly. This is the final step that legally authorizes you to operate your large model.Time to complete start to finish about 5-6 hours%u2026!It just takes 2x small screws or a strip of D/S tape to fit the plate. PLEASE take 5 minutes and fit it!The AID plate is now a MANDATORYmarking under the MFNZ LM programme.FAQ%u2019SModel Flying New Zealand (MFNZ) has a Large Model Certification Program to ensure the safe operation of large model aircraft.1 This program is a legal requirement under New Zealand law and aligns with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules. The program divides large models into four categories based on weight and power output, each with specific certification requirements.________________________________________Category 1: WeightCategory 1 models are defined by their weight.%u2022 Weight: Models weighing between 15 kg and 25 kg (including fuel).%u2022 Legal Requirement: It's a legal requirement to have a permit from MFNZ to fly these models. MFNZ has been delegated the authority by the CAAto issue these permits.%u2022 Permit Validity: Permits for Category 1 aircraft are valid for five years from the date of issue.%u2022 Pilot Qualification: The pilot must hold an MFNZLarge Model (LM) wings qualification for the specific aircraft type.________________________________________Category 2a and 2b: WeightThese categories cover models significantly heavier than Category 1 and are managed by MFNZ under the authority of the CAAfor recreational use.%u2022 Category 2a: Models weighing between 25 kg and 75 kg (including fuel).%u2022 Category 2b: Models weighing between 75 kg and 150 kg (including fuel).%u2022 Legal Requirement: MFNZ issues a Permit to Flyfor these aircraft, which is a legal requirement.%u2022 Permit Validity: Permits for Category 2a are valid for three years, while Category 2b permits are valid for only one yearfrom issue.%u2022 Flight Testing: Before a permit is issued, these models require a specific amount of flight testing:o Category 2a: A minimum of one hour of flight time.o Category 2b: A minimum of 1.5 hours of flight time.________________________________________Category 3: Power OutputCategory 3 models are not classified by weight, but rather by their more powerful engines, even if they weigh less than 15kg.%u2022 Power-based Classification: A model falls into this category if its power system exceeds any of the following thresholds:o Internal combustion engine: Greater than 88cc capacity.o Turbine: Greater than 142 N of thrust.o Turboprop: Greater than a sustained output of 5.2 kW.o Electric motor: Greater than a sustained input of 5 kW.%u2022 Permit Validity: Permits for Category 3 aircraft are valid for five years, similar to Category 1.%u2022 Safety Precaution: While models in this category may be under the 15kg weight limit for other certifications, MFNZ requires certification as a safety precaution due to the high power.________________________________________General Certification and OperationRegardless of the category, all large model aircraft must comply with the MFNZ Large Model Code of Practice (LMCOP). The certification process involves an MFNZappointed inspector who reviews the model's design, construction, and flight testing. The pilot must also hold the relevant MFNZ LM wings qualification. All certified large models must be flown with a failsafe function that, at a minimum, reduces the power to idle in the event of a radio signal loss.Big Modelsbased on Wingspan or Scale Size Only are not part of the MFNZ Certification Program unless their weight or power exceed that permitted by the MFNZ LM Certification Program.CAR102All LM pilots and owners need to read through this CAR102 Document and be aware of their responsibilities as a CAR102 operator.Any questions you might have on anything to do with our LM operations please drop me a line lmc@mfnz.org39
