I settled on a 14x4 wood prop and a fuel mix of 75% 91- Now I had to decide what to build that would suit the OS61
octane petrol and 25% of SAE60 Penrite mineral oil. and carry a sensible amount of fuel.
Economy test runs were made to find the engine run with
fuel volumes ranging from 15, 20 and 2 mL. My set-up Another Lanzo Airborne was settled on, this time with a
achieved 10 minutes on 25mL. For Open Texaco the fuel 1320 square inch wing and a wing span of 2.7 metres. This
allocation is 0.1mL fuel for every five square inches of wing size gave a fuel allocation of 26.4mL. The wing loading
area, so a wing of 1000 square inches would be allowed was 11.6 ounces per square foot which I thought was a
20mL. good outcome.
Test flying proved the plane had the performance and
economy to do well in Open Texaco with spark ignition
power. It easily achieves the 15 minute maximum flight
time and won the class at our Nationals”.
