over three minutes in the neutral air in which the E36 fly-off
was flown. E36 is a relatively new class and looks to be a
lot of fun with models providing a very good level of
performance without the hassle of messy oily engines.
Similarly Combined Open postponed to the Saturday was
eventually decided by a fly-off on Sunday morning as five
of the seven competitors had maxed out in Saturday’s
excellent conditions. The fly-off was flown after E36 in light
wind with slightly buoyant air but no real thermal
assistance. Four of the five fly-off participants used rubber
models while Antony Koerbin used a hi-tech F1A glider
that had a wonderful glide. Antony was unlucky to have his
model fly out of sight behind a downwind hedgerow late in
the flight. It was retrieved about 100 metres beyond Stew
Cox’s winning Skywalker large Open Rubber model and
was probably the longest flight highlighting that luck can
sometimes play a part in free flight results.
The overall champion this year was Wayne Lightfoot who
flew to a consistently high standard with a fleet of very nice Antony Koerbin with his minute Kevin Barnes launching his catapult
and interesting models. Certificates at the prizegiving Veron Cardinal powered by a Kalper glider.

were spread across many fliers although the more
important measure of success was that everyone went
home with smiles on their faces from a highly enjoyable
and memorable event. It’s fair to say that we all slept well
Sunday night somewhat flown out after two full days of
flying in the wonderful Carterton fresh air and sunshine.
Bring on next year’s NIFFC!
