As part of the MFNZ’s 5 yearly CAR102 certificate renewal, CAA requested that MFNZ setup a Wings renewal process, putting its Wings programme in line with CAA’s other CAR 102 operators.

The MFNZ Wings Renewal programme will see all pilots in the MFNZ Wings Scheme go through the renewal process every 5 years.

From January 1st 2025, and over the following 5 years, all members with a wings badge will be expected to renew their qualification.  The timeline for this will be based on your wings badge number as per the table below.  A notice and reminders will be sent in the year you are due for this.

In 2025 membership numbers 0-5000 will be expected to complete the renewal process

YearBand of MNFZ Numbers
 20250 – 5000
20265000 – 8000
20278000 – 10000
202810000 – 12000
202912000 –

The Renewal process will be a 2 part process.

Wings holders will sit an online open book 20 question quiz related to Airspace and Rules with all the answers findable in a document linked to the exam.  This is intended to improve our knowledge of the airspace we fly in and our responsibility to other airspace users.  It is not something to be worried about passing or failing – you can go back and sit again until you get to the required pass mark.

Once that is completed, book a time with an approved Wings Examiner.  The list of approved examiners can be found in the links below.

On the flight check day there will be a short flight to demonstrate continued competency and some oral questions around preflight checks, flying site specific rules and local airspace rules and knowledge.  Neither of these two elements is expected to be onerous or difficult – more a refresher of your knowledge and ability to operate safely.

Please note, if you don’t wish to participate in the renewal program your wings qualification will lapse at the end of  2025.

Initial Issue of New / Lapsed Wings Qualification

Note the Wings Renewal Programme is not a replacement for the current Wings programme.  Pilots wishing to gain a new qualification or replace lapsed qualifications will need to follow the process  outlined in the Wings Program document.

Effective from 1st January 2025, pilots gaining their first Wings Qualification will be required to complete the online Airspace and Rules training quiz – the same as for the Wings Renewal Program.  Links to the training  and quiz are listed at the bottom of this page.  This should be completed before the Wings Qualification Flight test and Oral questions.
