Purpose
The purpose of the SIG is to promote and organise well-attended rallies that provide opportunities for flyers of big models to enjoy gathering and flying together. The Big Model Rallies SIG carries on the tradition of LMANZ and the original MANZ.
Eligible Models
The SIG uses the name ‘Big’ because ‘Large’ is already used in the name Large Model Programme that certifies models that fly specifically under CAR Part 102. Many other models are big in terms of dimensions but fly under CAR Part 101 because they weigh less than 15kg. ‘Big’ covers models flown under CAR Part 101 and Part 102:
- Models that fly under CAR Part 102 because they are certified by the Large Model Programme in Cat 1 or Cat 2 or Cat 3.
- Models that weigh less than 15kg (and hence fly under CAR Part 101) and comply with MANZ Classic size criteria:
- Monoplanes at least 2m wingspan
- Biplanes at least 1.5m wingspan
- Wingspan plus length at least 3.5m
- If scale, at least ¼ scale
All forms of power can be used – IC, electric and turbine.
Liaison with Large Model Programme
The SIG liaises with the Large Model Programme to ensure a clear distinction between big models that fly under CAR Part 101 and are specified by size, and those that fly under CAR Part 102 and must be certified.
Operations
The SIG operates by arranging with clubs to host the rallies. These clubs have flying sites suitable for all big models and are located in regions that have sufficient interest.
Rally Schedule
All rallies are advised on the MFNZ Calendar.
